Power centers of Geneva, in terms of revenues, employees and influence, include Hobart & William Smith Colleges; the Geneva City School District; city government, and Geneva General Hospital.

Hobart & William Smith Colleges – The colleges employed 1,688 people in FY 2022 (July 1, 2022 to June 31, 2023). Total revenues were $148.6 mllion, including $22 million in contributions and grants.

Geneva City School District – With about 2,000 and 224 full-time teachers, the district has a budget of $75.9 million in 2025-2026.

Geneva city government – The city’s general fund budget for 2025 totaled $20.8 million. (For more detail, see our city finances page.)

Geneva General Hospital – Part of the UR Medicine network, the hospital reported revenues of $108.5 million in FY 2023. The facility employed 899 people, for a total payroll of $63.1 million.

Cornell Agritech – Formerly known as the NYS Agricultural Experiment Station, the campus was established as part of a state drive to promote agricultural research. The Geneva campus is now the main satellite of the Cornell University. An expansion of the facility, Tech Farm II, was completed in 2025 with help from Empire State Development.
